It looks like spring has finally arrived in the Catskills. There are now a variety of insects hatching currently. This can be one of the most difficult times figuring out what the fish are feeding on. Are they eating the nymphs on the bottom or the emerging ones that will soon become winged flies? The answer is all of the above. Your best bet for success will be to fish a tandem rig made up of two of the predominate insects. The most successful as of late has been a heavily weighted black Stonefly nymph with a Caddis emerger in tow. Fish the rig well upstream to allow the heavy nymph to reach the bottom them allow the combo to swing all way downstream so the emerger rises to the surface. Let the flies swing in the current for a few seconds before lifting for your next cast. The fish are still a little sluggish. Give them a chance to eat your flies.
